For our second edition of Eyeducation, our editorial to get to know better the inspirations and backgrounds of our brands, we are focusing our attentions on Barcelona’s emerging independent Kaleos Eyehunters.

Joan Gassó and Claudia Brotons, Kaleos’ founders, met at university studying a BBA degree, and Kaleos’ history starts with the idea to continue Joan’s grandfather dream to distribute frames. However, they had their own dream: to create their own eyewear brand. They got to work studying the consumer and the market place, and they delivered the debut collection.

Whilst studying, Joan was more focused on the commercial side of the business, and Claudia was more interested in fashion, and so she spent her summer holidays at the iconic Saint Martin’s school of London studying fashion.

After finishing his university degree, Joan started working in the family-owned company and Claudia went to Arteixo, the Inditex HQ in Spain to work for high street fashion giant Zara. She also went on to earn a fashion master’s degree in Milan.

Leaving Milan, Claudia started helping Joan in the project OF opening an optical store with very exclusive product to study well the customers’ fashion tastes to research for their own brand. In September 2014 they launch the first Kaleos’ collection and and won immediate plaudits, and crucially, orders, from leading optical boutiques in Europe.

Like any small business, the first years were spent working on the brand in their own free time: working at night and during the weekend, so that’s why they converted their house in a design studio. They put the drawings on the floor, and took decisions while they were preparing the dinner, approved colors before going to work, and the campaign characters were relatives and friends.

That’s how Kaleos started. Step by step the sales were growing, so they could have their own head office, incorporate Claudia “officially” to the Kaleos brand and start developing their own small team.

Today, Kaleos Eyehunters is one of the most respected and exciting emerging brands in the independent market place, a combination of outstanding design, vision, quality and crucially, accessible price point. As the brand say themselves…

“There is one word that defines us.

A word packed with attitude and temperament, but one that is not shouted, rather suggested. A word that summarises what we do better than any other. Because it speaks of us without saying who we are, saying only who we are dedicated to. Because we design the most eye-catching glasses, not to have, but to fully captivate unique glances.

Above all else, at KALEOS we hunt for exclusive looks. We are EYEHUNTERS.

Glasses say a lot about you, more than you could ever imagine. That is why we’ve gone to a lot of effort to make KALEOS glasses ones that reflect everybody’s personality and attitude in any situation, even on a Sunday afternoon. A wide selection of frames that everyone can identify with, from more conventional and reserved individuals to modern, extravagant trendsetters. Exquisite design, top quality materials and more than attractive prices are ingrained in our DNA. And if that weren’t enough, our collection is dynamic, constantly growing, renewing and enriching itself in order to never cease to surprise you.

So now, we can say four-eyed and proud.”
